OpenAI's president thinks the company could be ready to go public in 2027

OpenAI could be in a position to list its shares in 2027, according to its president, Greg Brockman, who raised the idea in Napa without giving any date. Brockman added that businesses are now its biggest buyers, although he offered no figures. Codex is one of the pieces OpenAI is using to fight Anthropic for that market, and Anthropic will probably reach the stock market first.

Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, believes the company will be prepared to go public in 2027. He said so on Wednesday, November 4, in Napa, California, during a conference organized by The Wall Street Journal.

Asked whether OpenAI would have everything ready to debut on the stock market next year, he answered "I think so," according to Reuters, as cited by Infobae. Brockman did not set a date or commit on the company's behalf.

He also said that most of the revenue now comes from sales to businesses, although he did not specify what percentage they represent or how much OpenAI brings in overall, as DiarioBitcoin points out. In that market OpenAI competes with Anthropic, and Codex, its coding agent, has played a central role in the push toward businesses, according to the same outlet.

According to the summary of the talk published by the TLDR newsletter, as relayed by Infobae, Brockman described a difficult first half of the year, in which Anthropic gained ground among business customers, and a turnaround in the third quarter, when new agentic coding tools spread and sales to businesses moved ahead of consumer sales. At the end of March, when announcing a funding round, OpenAI had said that businesses accounted for more than 40% of its revenue and that it expected them to match consumers by the end of 2026, Unite.AI recalls, also as cited by Infobae.

The idea of going public is not new. Reuters reported that OpenAI confidentially submitted a draft prospectus to US regulators in June, and that same month Bloomberg reported that the IPO could be delayed until 2027, according to DiarioBitcoin. Anthropic, its rival, will probably debut on the stock market before the end of 2026, according to Reuters.

Why it matters · analysis and opinion

The date matters less than the shift that comes with it: the company that became known for a chat app for the general public now lives, above all, on what other businesses pay it. It is the same track Anthropic is running on, and the two are now competing for the customers who spend the most, with coding agents as their main argument. Going public would force OpenAI to publish its revenue and its spending commitments in a detail it does not offer today, and that would allow a real comparison between the two rivals. Until then, Brockman's words are an expectation, not a timetable, and anyone making purchasing or investment decisions should treat them that way.
