Bloomberg Government reported on Thursday that US Senate aides will be able to use Anthropic's Claude, and Politico published the same news hours later citing two other people. The assistant would join Gemini, ChatGPT and Copilot, which staff already had in April. Politico adds that it is not clear when it will arrive and that each office chooses how it uses AI.

The US Senate is getting ready to tell its staff that they will soon be able to use Claude, Anthropic's artificial intelligence assistant. Bloomberg Government broke the news on Thursday, October 15, citing three people with knowledge of the plans. Hours later, Politico reported that the chamber plans to give its workers that access, according to two people familiar with the matter who spoke without being named.

The move would widen the range of AI tools available to thousands of Senate aides. It comes after months of concern among senators and aides about the limits of the AI they have inside the chamber, and at a time when some senators have publicly admitted that they do not use these products themselves.

Claude would not be the first option on offer. In April, Jennifer Hemingway, the Senate Sergeant at Arms, said in testimony that staff already had access to Google's Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot. The Sergeant at Arms office, which provides technical support to the chamber, also leads a working group on how Congress uses AI and what it needs. According to Politico, each office chooses how to use the technology.

Both chambers have internal rules on using AI tools in official work: in the Senate they were published by the Sergeant at Arms office, and in the House of Representatives by its Chief Administrative Office.

Politico says it is unclear when Claude will become available. Neither the Sergeant at Arms office nor Anthropic responded right away to its request for comment.

Why it matters · analysis and opinion

The Senate offering its staff one more assistant says more about the market than about politics. Large institutions no longer stick with a single AI provider: they bring together several and let each office decide which one works for it and for what. For Anthropic, getting into the daily work of the US legislature is a valuable showcase, all the more so when it competes there with Microsoft, OpenAI and Google. What is still missing is what it takes to gauge the scope: there is no date, and neither the terms of use nor the tasks it can be used for are known. The internal rules that already govern AI in official work will set how far it goes. For any organization choosing tools, the pattern is useful: several options, shared rules and someone to coordinate them.
