OpenAI Will Buy Pierre Computer, the Code Storage Company, and Bring Its Features to Codex

OpenAI is taking over Pierre Computer Company, maker of Code Storage and of the Trees and Diffs libraries the Codex app already builds in. Codex will gradually absorb what Code Storage offers, whose customers keep the service once the deal closes, and Pierre's open tools will keep that status. Pierre and OpenAI stay separate until regulators approve the purchase, whose price is not known.

On Wednesday, November 4, OpenAI announced it will buy Pierre Computer Company, the maker of Code Storage, a service apps rely on to keep code and its Git history, along with several open-source developer tools.

Anyone using the Codex app, OpenAI's programming assistant, is already working with two Pierre libraries: Trees, to move through a project's files, and Diffs, to review what has changed in the code. Pierre has given Diffs an editing mode so a reviewer can correct a line at the very spot where the error shows up, and not long ago it launched Highlights, a syntax highlighter built to refresh while someone types or while an agent is still generating code.

OpenAI says it wants to start from the Git workflows developers already use and fit them to teams that work alongside coding agents. Two days earlier, on Monday, November 2, the company described how it handles Git internally with Pando, its own version control system for engineers and agents.

According to the announcement, Pierre's open projects will stay open source and OpenAI will keep contributing to them. After closing, Code Storage customers will still be able to use it while its features move into Codex. The purchase hinges on the usual closing conditions, among them a green light from regulators, and until then the two companies operate on their own. Breaking The News notes that the financial details of the deal have not been made public.

Why it matters · analysis and opinion

The purchase fits what OpenAI has been saying this week: the tools around Git have to change when much of the work is done by agents in parallel. Taking over the team that already made the review pieces in Codex targets the most visible bottleneck, which is reading and approving large volumes of code written by a machine. For anyone paying for Code Storage, the promised continuity comes with no dates or conditions, so it is worth watching the service's notices. Anyone using Trees or Diffs in their own products has the commitment that they will stay open, although it is reasonable to expect their development to follow Codex's needs from now on. And nothing is final until regulators give their approval.
