What is a language model (LLM)
The engine behind tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: a program trained on huge amounts of text to understand and write.
It learns patterns of language from enormous amounts of text and uses them to work out the most likely continuation. Repeated very fast, that lets it write, summarize, translate or code.
Companies release families of models in different sizes: the large ones reason better and cost more; the small ones are fast and cheap for simple tasks.
