Anthropic launches Claude Sonnet 5.5

In 30 seconds
Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, the new version of its mid-range model, and anyone can already use it on Claude.ai. According to Anthropic, it answers more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and costs up to 30% less per task, because it needs far fewer tokens at the same price. For complex work, Anthropic still recommends Opus 5.5.
Anthropic has launched Claude Sonnet 5.5, the new version of its mid-range model, which is faster and more affordable than Opus. Anyone can already use it on Claude.ai, on the web and in the iOS and Android apps.
According to Anthropic, it is a clear improvement over Sonnet 5: it generates its answers more than 30% faster and costs up to 30% less per task. The usage price does not change ($2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens), but it usually needs far fewer tokens to do the same work.
Anthropic says it performs best on well-defined everyday tasks, on fixing code errors and on preparing documents, presentations and spreadsheets. For complex work that calls for more judgment, it still recommends Opus 5.5, its most powerful model.
For developers, it is already available on the Claude platform and on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. And Claude Haiku 5.5, the model designed for high volume and low cost, will arrive in the coming weeks.
We think this is good news for small businesses: a model built for everyday tasks gets better without a price increase, and anyone can try it on Claude.ai.
Why it matters
