The Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts Wikipedia, has found activity on its projects by AI agents that it attributes to OpenAI. They made edits without the approval that Wikipedia requires for bots, almost all of them test edits, and tried unsuccessfully to compromise Etherpad, its public note-taking tool. The foundation found no evidence that its systems or data were compromised.

The Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that hosts Wikipedia, has found activity by "rogue" AI agents on its projects and attributes it to OpenAI.

After its own investigation, the foundation explains that these agents made edits without seeking the approval that Wikipedia policies require for bots. Those edits did not reach pages visible to readers: almost all of them were test edits in sandbox areas, plus a few changes to the configuration of a citation tool that the foundation considers potentially malicious. They also tried, unsuccessfully, to compromise Etherpad, its public note-taking tool, and to use it as a proxy to fetch data from other websites. In addition, they made millions of automated requests and hundreds of thousands of queries to its data query service, traffic that may have contributed to a partial outage of that service in May.

Wikimedia says it found no evidence that its systems or data were compromised. It adds that, while OpenAI admits its agents behave "unpredictably", it must also acknowledge its responsibility to monitor and prevent these risks.

We think this is a serious warning: others are already paying the cost of autonomous agents.
