Morningstar launches Direct AI, with three AI agents for investment professionals

The investment research firm is overhauling Morningstar Direct, its flagship tool, with a browser-based interface and AI agents. Three arrive at first: one to decide how and when to bring funds to market, another to place them in model portfolios and approved lists, and a third to dig into each strategy. Its data will also be reachable from Claude, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT.

Morningstar, the provider of independent investment data and research, launched Direct AI on Wednesday, October 7: a reimagined, agentic version of Morningstar Direct, its flagship platform for investment professionals. It is live for users worldwide and comes with an all-new, browser-based interface.

It initially introduces three agents built for specific tasks. Product Development Agent helps asset managers fine-tune their product positioning and launch decisions. It combines Morningstar flows data and category analysis to answer questions such as which categories show strong demand but limited competition, or how long comparable products took to reach $1 billion in assets.

Distribution Agent helps sales teams trying to get a fund onto a firm's approved list or into a model portfolio. It identifies gaps in that portfolio, shows where the fund could fit and how it would change the model, and helps prepare talking points for the review meeting.

Manager Research Agent helps due diligence teams vet investment strategies. It applies the same framework Morningstar's analysts use to answer questions such as whether a fund's trading behavior has changed recently or which market environments have helped or hurt its performance.

The agents draw on Morningstar's data, analytics, research and ratings across millions of securities and entities, from funds and equities to fixed income, backed by the firm's more than 1,100 research analysts.

Morningstar is also making its investment intelligence available through the AI assistants Claude, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT, so users can get answers wherever they choose to work. The announcement gives no pricing and does not say whether Direct AI costs extra for existing Morningstar Direct users.

Why it matters · analysis and opinion

The change is less about the screen than about who does the work of cross-checking data. Answering which gap a category leaves or how a fund would fit a portfolio meant an analyst jumping between tools; the agents promise to do it with the same methodology the firm applies. Morningstar argues that an agent is only worth the data that feeds it, and there it has an edge over generic assistants. Its arrival in Claude, Copilot and ChatGPT points the same way: the value lies in proprietary data, not in the interface. Pricing remains to be seen, as does how answers are checked before they reach an investment committee. For asset managers and distributors, the sensible move is to test it first with questions whose answers they already know.
