In 30 seconds
The London-based voice AI company will put more than a tenth of the almost $1 billion raised so far into India, though Mati Staniszewski gave no exact figure. Eleven V4 already speaks 14 Indian languages, and the target is all 22 official ones within months. For ElevenLabs, India is the largest market after the US.
ElevenLabs, the London-based AI voice company, is stepping up its bet on India.
Its co-founder and CEO, Mati Staniszewski, told Reuters and India's CNBC-TV18 that the company plans to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in the country, although he did not give the exact amount. It expects to spend a double-digit percentage of the nearly $1 billion it has raised on India, covering model development, local teams and work on Indian languages.
At the company's Bengaluru Summit on October 6, Staniszewski said that Eleven V4, its latest text-to-speech model, launched last week, already supports 14 Indian languages, and that the goal is to reach all 22 officially recognized languages in the coming months. The company calls India its biggest market outside the US.
We see the AI voice race being played out more and more in local languages.
Why it matters · analysis and opinion
The real story is not the investment, which has no final figure, but the languages. India has 22 officially recognized languages, and synthetic voice is only useful if it sounds natural in each one. This matters to anyone who serves customers by phone, creates content or sells in several countries: voice tools that already work well in English and Spanish are starting to cover markets they could not reach before. In our view, a small business that dubs videos, records ads or runs a phone assistant should check which languages its provider handles well before entering a new market, rather than assuming quality is the same everywhere.
