Geely Holding and Google have struck a worldwide deal to build Gemini, Google Maps, Google Play and other Google services into the vehicles it markets beyond China. The debut is targeted for the second half of 2027, excluding the United States and depending on each market's rules and requirements. Polestar has used them since 2020; smart, Proton, Riddara, Lynk & Co and Geely will now join.
Geely Holding, the Chinese car group whose brands include Geely, Lynk & Co, smart, Proton and Polestar, has announced a global strategic alliance with Google. The aim is to bring Google Automotive Services, Google's factory-installed in-car services, to the models the group sells outside China.
Qualifying cars from its brands will get Gemini, Google's AI assistant, along with Google Maps, Google Play (the in-car app store) and other services. The announcement describes a system with a large multimodal voice model, navigation, links to other devices and apps inside the vehicle, designed so that drivers keep their attention on the road.
The first car with these services is expected in the second half of 2027, in markets other than China and the United States, and it will depend on meeting each market's product, regulatory and readiness requirements. It will only reach countries where Google's services are offered.
Next in line are passenger cars from Geely, Lynk & Co, Riddara, Proton, smart and other brands in the group. It is not a first for the group: Polestar has carried these services since 2020, when it introduced them in the Polestar 2.
Geely says digital habits and the services people rely on differ from one market to another, and that the alliance aims to link its customers to an ecosystem they already know. "People increasingly expect the same level of convenience and connectivity in their cars as they enjoy in their everyday lives," said Shen Yuan, Geely Holding's chief technology officer and senior vice president. Google's product director for Android for Cars, Haris Ramic, spoke of giving drivers "their favorite apps, intuitive navigation and a personal AI assistant right from their dashboard."
Specific models, markets, features and timing will be announced later; until then, the group points customers to each brand's websites and dealers.
Why it matters · analysis and opinion
The alliance confirms that the dashboard is now another arena where AI assistants compete. Geely acknowledges that digital habits change from one market to another and, outside China, it prefers to rely on services drivers already know from their phones. For Google, adding the brands of such a broad group takes Gemini into many more cars, beyond the phone. For anyone thinking of buying one of these models, there is nothing concrete yet: the models, countries and features are still missing, and the timeline is long. Nor is it clear what Gemini will be able to do in everyday use of the car, a detail worth checking once the brands spell it out.
