The US Department of Defense no longer uses Anthropic's AI tools, an official has confirmed to the BBC.
In February, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic a national security supply chain risk and announced that the Pentagon would stop using it by late August. He did so after the company refused to remove the safeguards on Claude, its AI model, over concerns about mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
Several sources told the BBC that the Pentagon was still using Claude last week, including in military operations against Iran, and that it was embedded in Maven Smart System, the Pentagon's main platform for organizing intelligence and other data, which is operated by Palantir. Anthropic, which has sued the government to overturn the designation, declined to comment.
Lauren Kahn, an analyst at Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology, noted that once these tools are integrated, they can be complicated to remove.
