Redpine is bringing on six scientific publishers as partners, BMJ Group, Sage and IOP Publishing among them, putting their work within reach of AI agents. Agents can search over 20 million papers, all of them peer-reviewed, in real time through the API or the MCP server, and cite them in their answers. Each publisher sets the rules and the price per query, and Redpine passes most of the revenue back.
Redpine, a Swedish company that gives AI agents access to licensed data, has announced that six scientific publishers are joining as content partners: BMJ Group, Sage, IOP Publishing, IGI Global Scientific Publishing, Wanfang Data and RCNi. They are among the partners sharing more than 20 million peer-reviewed articles with Redpine.
Agents reach them live through the Redpine API and its MCP server (the protocol that connects AI tools to outside sources). According to the company, this lets an agent retrieve and cite the original paper at the moment it answers, instead of relying on its training data. The science service is called Redpine Science.
It is a pay-per-use service. Each publisher decides what an agent can and cannot use and sets the price of each transaction. Redpine says it shares "the vast majority" of its revenue with them.
"The future of AI-driven scientific discovery should draw on all scientific research, without hallucinations and with both attribution and compensation to rights holders," said Anders Hammarbäck, Redpine's CEO and co-founder.
Why it matters · analysis and opinion
Charging agents every time they consult a paper: that is Redpine's model, and it says a lot about where the content market is heading. Scientific publishers stop seeing AI only as something that learns from their work and start charging for live access, with control over what is used and at what price. For those building agents, the advantage is being able to cite the original in every answer, which is valuable in technical or health reports. The catch is that each publisher sets the price of each query, so the cost of heavy use is hard to predict.
