73% of new users of Muse, Meta's AI agent, return the next day, but ChatGPT overtakes it later

Muse, Meta's agent, wins back 73% of those installing it by the following day, almost double ChatGPT's share, in Sensor Tower measurements for September 2026. ChatGPT moves in front once the first week is over, between days eight and nine, and holds on to more new users at the two-week mark. Neither matches WhatsApp, YouTube or Instagram, established apps that keep more than half.

Of the people who install Muse, 73.3% open the app again the next day, compared with 41.3% for ChatGPT, almost double. Muse is Meta's personal artificial intelligence agent, launched in September: it connects to the accounts each user chooses and carries out tasks on their behalf.

The figures come from Sensor Tower, a firm that measures mobile app usage. They cover September 2026 and 81 countries, and they follow each app's new users through their first 14 days. Deedy Das, a partner at venture capital firm Menlo Ventures, shared them on X on October 12. Yahoo Finance reports the Sensor Tower analysis and Benzinga gives the detailed figures.

The early lead does not last. After seven days Muse is still in front, with more than 30%, but ChatGPT moves ahead between the eighth and the ninth day. After 14 days ChatGPT keeps 26.8% of its new users and Muse keeps 22.5%. In Benzinga's breakdown, Threads (21.2%), Google Maps (18.5%) and Grok (10.4%) sit behind Muse at that point.

Neither gets close to the most established apps: after 14 days WhatsApp keeps 67%, YouTube 59%, Instagram 54%, and TikTok and Snapchat 37%.

According to Similarweb, another measurement firm, Muse reached 2.18 million daily active users on October 5, and its usage has grown steadily so far this month, Yahoo Finance reports.

The same outlet places the numbers at a time when investors are watching Muse's usage closely, and points to an obstacle that has been reported: some websites, with Amazon as the most cited example, block AI agents when they try to browse or complete purchases. Benjamin Black, an analyst at Deutsche Bank, estimates that Muse could bring in as much as 8% of Meta's 2030 revenue, roughly $36 billion; at the low end of his forecast the figure is $2.4 billion.

These are measurements by outside firms, not figures published by Meta.

Why it matters · analysis and opinion

Coming back the next day measures curiosity; still being there two weeks later measures usefulness. The data says Muse sparks the first better than ChatGPT and has not yet secured the second: it loses users faster than a rival that has been on the market longer. An agent that acts for the user also depends on websites letting it in, and Yahoo Finance notes that some, such as Amazon, block these agents. If the tasks fail, the user does not come back. Anyone weighing whether to rely on an agent like this at work can try it now, but before depending on it they need to check that it works on the sites and services they actually use. And these are third-party estimates of a product that is only a few weeks old.
